Resident Awareness Education
The Open Door has all new residents immediately participate in a Back to Basics (B2B) Class. The B2B program is made-up of 4 one-hour sessions over four weeks normally involving reading from a specific instructional text as well as worthwhile discussions on all the subject matter exposed. The 12 Step Program of Alcoholics Anonymous is the key subject matter within the entire course. This is the initial course study for all residents to assist in aiding the newer resident to begin to identify his own spiritual path to long-term consistent recovery.
The Open Door Education System is quite flexible allowing for those that have had extensive higher education and or advanced training, as well as those still struggling to attain a High School graduate status. Any resident needing to develop a course of study that will lead to a GED graduate degree is empowered to do so as soon as physically possible.
After the B2B is completed a resident is enrolled, and must attend the Survival Skills for Men (SSFM Workshops). The Survival Skills Workshops consist of ten workshops, three hours in length. Each workshop has a variety of games, role-playing exercises and shared problem solving. The normal course study meets twice a week for five weeks. Graduates report the entire course study to be highly informative and thought provoking in light of their specific situation.
The Course Work is titled:
- Survivors & Heroes
- Advancing/Employment
- Finding and Getting a Job
- Money Management
- Problem Solving
- Legal Rights & Responsibilities
- Keeping Your Job
- Personal & Family Health
- Goals & Aspirations
- Family Man
